Power to the people!

One of the most well documented and well announced problems in Pakistan is the shortage of electricity.  Hamare mulk mein load shedding kyon hai as been told and retold so often, even my 4 year old could tell you why!

I believe a problem can never be causes by just 3 people to effect millions. Many more are involved in the root cause of the problem lovingly revered to as load shedding. What are we doing wrong?

Two things we learned in Holland 20 years ago was:  first how to preserve energy and second how to generate it. Preserving electricity is too easy. Like all obvious things this too needs to be told again and again.
* Turn off the light and fan when you leave a room.
* When going to sleep, take out the plug from tv, video etc.
Get  block  ice to keep your refrigerator and freezer as cold  as possible if the power is going to be out for an extended period of time.

In Holland there isn’t a week that goes by without rain. Phir bhi many houses have solar panels to harvest any heat the sun gives, and use it to heat water.  I am so surprised to see so many people are waiting for electricity in pakistan. But no one is placing solar panels to light at least one room. It just boggles my mind!

I know the first comment I am about to get is: we are too poor to buy solar panels. Well first of all solar panels can be bought for less than 400 usd. Most of you reading will have more expensive computers than that! Second imagine if 10 people buy solar panels and use less electricity, that would  mean at least 10 people a day are saved in hospitals that would have died without electricity. Matlab araam ka araam aur sawaab ka sawaab!

Second most heard excuse is I will still get the same electric bill, to mera kya faida? I know this is true. Don't see it as replacement from normal electricity, see it as a support like you use generators! We can make a difference in our thoughts and lives, Power to the people!
